The tall Instagram feed, not a Story
4:5 is the tall Instagram feed crop (1080×1350). It shows more of a portrait than 1:1 without becoming 9:16 Stories.

1080×1350 is the master to remember. It is not 1080×1440 (3:4) and not 1080×1920 (9:16). Stories want the taller frame; the feed wants this one. The 4:5 aspect ratio is also what a school portrait printed at 8×10 already was, which is why photographers think in it without opening the app.
8×10 inch paper is 4:5. A school portrait printed at 8×10 is the same shape as an Instagram portrait feed crop. That coincidence is why photographers already think in 4:5 even if they never open the app.
1080×1350 is the usual social master. It is not 1080×1440 (3:4) and not 1080×1920 (9:16). Stories want the taller frame; the feed wants this one.
Where 4:5 came from
Instagram documented 4:5 as the portrait feed limit so a photo could use more phone-screen height than a square. Print 8×10 inch paper is also 4:5.
Cropping a landscape group shot
From 1920×1080, a 4:5 trim is 864×1080 and a padded canvas is 1920×2400. That trim is gentler than a 9:16 Story crop, and it still drops faces that sit on the far left or right. Pad when the whole group must survive.
From 1920×1080, 4:5 is a moderate crop compared with 9:16. Faces near the left or right edge still fall off. Pad if the whole landscape group shot must survive.
4:5 is shorter than 3:4 and 2:3. A 1080×1350 frame is unique on this site as a resolution page as well.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram portrait?
1080×1350. That pair is 4:5. A square alternative is 1080×1080. A Story is 1080×1920.
Is an 8×10 print the same shape?
Yes. 10÷8 = 1.25, and 5÷4 = 1.25, so an upright 8×10 is this 4:5 aspect ratio. A 6×8 print is 3:4 instead.
Should a feed photo be 4:5 or 1:1?
4:5 uses more of the phone screen. 1:1 is the even grid and the avatar shape. Pick from the layout, not from a default export.
How hard is the crop from 16:9?
Trim to 864×1080, which keeps more width than a 9:16 cut of the same photo. Pad to 1920×2400 if you cannot lose the edges.
