Summarize with
YouTube, HDTV and the widescreen default
16:9 is the default for HDTV, YouTube landscape uploads, Blu-ray and most laptop panels. 1920×1080, 1280×720 and 3840×2160 all simplify to 16:9.

“1080p” names a height of 1080 on this shape. 1920×1080, 1280×720, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 share the 16:9 aspect ratio and not a megapixel count. 1080×1920 is a different article.
The 16:9 family on this site includes 1280×720, 1920×1080, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160. They share a shape and not a megapixel count. “1080p” names a height; 1080×1920 is a different article.
How widescreen replaced the old TV
ITU-R BT.709 defined 1920×1080 as the HDTV production format with a 16:9 picture. Consumer “widescreen” replaced 4:3 sets in the 2000s. Phones later popularized the rotated 9:16, which is the same ratio standing up.
When people say “widescreen” they almost always mean 16:9 today. Cinema scope is 2.39:1. Ultrawide monitors are often 64:27. This page stays with the HDTV rectangle so those other keywords keep their own URLs.
Putting a vertical clip back on YouTube
A 1080×1920 story heading to a landscape player trims to 1080×607 or pads to 3414×1920. Trimming keeps a horizontal band through the middle. Padding adds side bars so the whole vertical picture stays in frame, which is the usual way to archive a Story inside a 16:9 timeline.
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding still lists these landscape frames. That is why the homepage defaults to 1920×1080 → 16:9 in noscript. If your laptop is 1920×1200, you are on 16:10, not 16:9. See that page instead of forcing a TV crop.
16:9 is wider than 4:3 and 3:2. Ultrawide marketing 21:9 is wider still. Vertical 9:16 is the swap, used for Shorts, Reels and Stories.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4K still 16:9?
3840×2160 simplifies to 16:9. It is sharper than 1920×1080, not more widescreen. The shape is the 16:9 aspect ratio. The pixel count is the resolution.
Why does my 1920×1200 laptop not match?
That panel is 16:10. A 16:9 film on it shows slim bars or a slight zoom. Do not force the screenshot into a TV crop and call it 1080p.
What does 1.78:1 mean?
16÷9 is about 1.78. Catalogues print 1.78:1 when they mean this widescreen fraction.
Can one master feed both YouTube and Shorts?
Not without a second frame. Landscape stays here. Full-screen vertical is 9:16, with its own crop from this master.
