Portrait prints, flyers and rotated phone photos

3:4 is the upright partner of 4:3. Phone portraits, print flyers and some social crops use three units wide for every four tall. It is not a “small 4:3”; it is a different orientation with its own resolution table.

3:4 Aspect Ratio - Aspect Ratio Calculator

A client who says “portrait TV still” usually means this frame. A client who says “Instagram portrait” means 4:5. Mixing them throws away a strip. 3000×4000 from a phone that shot 4:3 landscape, then rotated, is exactly 3:4.

Print shops still quote 6×8 and 9×12 sheets. Those are 3:4 paper, not Instagram’s 4:5. If a client says “portrait TV still,” they often mean 3:4; if they say “Instagram portrait,” they mean 4:5. Mixing the two wastes a strip of pixels.

Phone cameras that capture 4:3 landscape become 3:4 when you rotate the file 90°. The GCD does not care about EXIF orientation; the 3:4 Aspect Ratio calculator reads the stored width and height you type. A 3000×4000 export is exactly 3:4.

Paper sizes that actually are 3:4

Print shops have long sold 3:4 sheets (for example a 6×8 inch print). Digital cameras that output 4:3 landscape become 3:4 when you rotate the body. This URL is the upright pair so it does not reuse the landscape 4:3 article.

Building a poster from a landscape interview

From 1920×1080 the trim is 810×1080 and the padded sheet is 1920×2560. You lose width if you cut, and you gain a lot of height if you pad. Either result is still a 3:4 aspect ratio. Order a 3:4 aspect ratio for a 6×8 print, and open the 4:5 page when the app wants an Instagram portrait.

From 1920×1080, 3:4 is a tall target: crop width drops and pad height grows. That is the opposite of going 16:9 to 21:9. Keep this page bookmarked when you need a poster from a landscape interview clip.

The landscape pair is 4:3, on its own page. A 1080-wide 3:4 frame is 1080×1440. That is not 1080×1350 (4:5) and not 1080×1920 (9:16).

Frequently asked questions

What pixel size is a 3:4 poster at 1080 wide?

1080×1440. That is not 1080×1350 (4:5) and not 1080×1920 (9:16).

Is a 6×8 print the Instagram portrait?

No. 6×8 and 9×12 are this shape. Instagram’s tall feed crop is 4:5, and an 8×10 print matches that other page.

My camera file says 4000×3000. Is that 3:4?

Not until you rotate it. 4000×3000 is 4:3 landscape. 3000×4000 is the 3:4 aspect ratio. Type the stored width and height, not the EXIF “up” arrow.

Should I crop or pad a 16:9 clip for a flyer?

Crop to 810×1080 when the subject is centred. Pad to 1920×2560 when type sits near an edge you cannot lose.
