Laptop panels with room for a toolbar

16:10 (also 8:5) is a laptop and productivity-monitor shape: 1920×1200 WUXGA, 1440×900, 1280×800. It gives more vertical UI than 16:9.

1920×1200 (WUXGA), 1440×900 and 1280×800 are the named rows. Shoppers search “16:10,” not “8:5,” even though the greatest common divisor reduces 16:10 to 8:5. The 16:10 aspect ratio is a UI decision: those extra rows hold a ribbon or a taskbar that 16:9 steals from the document.

WUXGA 1920×1200, 1440×900 and 1280×800 are the named 16:10 rows in resolutions.json. 16:10 is also 8:5 after GCD; the chip still says 16:10 because that is how laptop shoppers search.

A 16:9 movie on a 16:10 laptop shows slim letterbox or a slight zoom. The extra height is there for toolbars, ribbons and documents.

Why 16:10 left and came back

Many 2000s laptops shipped 16:10. The industry shifted to cheaper 16:9 TV panels, then 16:10 returned on modern productivity laptops. VESA lists 1920×1200 as WUXGA.

Watching 16:9 on a 16:10 screen

16:10 is taller than 16:9 for the same width. 1920×1200 vs 1920×1080 is 120 extra rows. That is the whole point of this ratio.

Do not call a 16:10 screenshot “1080p.” 1920×1200 is not 1920×1080. The 1920×1200 article owns that pixel pair.

A 16:9 movie on this panel shows slim letterbox or a slight zoom. Do not call a 1920×1200 screenshot 1080p. If you need to force a 16:9 file into 16:10, the trim from 1920×1080 is 1728×1080 and the padded canvas is 1920×1200.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1920×1200 the same as 1080p?

No. 1080p is 1920×1080, which is 16:9. 1920×1200 is 16:10. Same width, 120 more rows, different shape.

Is 16:10 the same as 8:5?

Yes. Divide 16 and 10 by 2. Laptop pages say 16:10 because that is the search. The 16:10 aspect ratio and 8:5 are one rectangle.

Why did laptops go back to 16:10?

Vertical room for documents and IDEs, after a decade of cheaper 16:9 TV glass. The film frame did not change; the work surface did.

What sizes should I design for?

1920×1200, 1440×900 and 1280×800 cover the common panels. Scale both sides if you need a screenshot at another 16:10 size.
